Michael Barros began his remarkable athletic career at ORR

his Jr. year after transferring back from Old Colony.

Mike “Big Sky” Barros had two of the most dominant seasons

of all time for Old Rochester Basketball. 

In his two seasons, Mike scored 900 points

and averaged over 15 rebounds per game.

However, it was his Sr. season that Mike

took his game to another level.

In his senior campaign

Mike averaged 23 pts,

18 rebounds and 3.5 blocks per game

while adding in a steal per game as well.

The word often used to describe

his play was “dominant”.

According to Mike’s teammates

not only was he incredibly unselfish on the court,

he was a great teammate as well.

Had they kept track of assists

when Mike played,

he would have had a lot of those as well.

Mike’s teams also excelled,

only losing five games in the two years

he was at ORR.

Mike led the bulldogs to

the Eastern MA Division 3 state championship

his senior year beating their rival

Wareham Vikings in the championship game. 

Mike was selected as first team all-conference in both seasons.

Mike was also selected as a coach’s top 48 all star

in his senior year for the state of Massachusetts.

In his senior year, Mike's statistics,

his team play, and gamesmenship

were not negotiable at ORR.

He scored 521 points, he grabbed 412 rebounds.

He also had 79 blocked shots

and he had 24 steals.

For his two years at ORR

Mike score over 900 points.

 

After graduating ORR,

Mike took his talents to Stonehill College

where he continued to display his

dominance as a basketball player.

Mike played all four years while attending

college and was named all-conference

in three of those seasons.

He was named first team all-conference

his junior and senior year.

Mike lead the league his senior year in scoring

and rebounding, averaging 22.9pts

and 9.6 rebounds per game while

leading his team to a league championship.

He finished his collegiate career

as the 5th all-time leading score

r at Stonehill, amassing 1,679 points.

After graduating from Stonehill College in 1988,

Mike was drafted by the Topeka Sizzlers

in the 5th round of the Continental Basketball Association’s draft.

In 2014 Stonehill honored Mike

by inducting him into their

Athletic Hall of Fame

where he still stands as the 5th all time leading scorer.

 

Michael currently lives in Mattapoisett

where he’s lived his entire life.

He is a proud Father and Grandfather

to his daughter and grandson that live with him as well. 

Mike is employed as the lead criminal investigator at

The Insurance Fraud Bureau and has been

employed there for the past 27 years.

He also volunteers as a member of

the board of directors with New England Community Services. 

In Mike’s free time he enjoys

following sports,especially basketball,

football and baseball,

as well as writing and recording music.
